Chapter Eight
When Angela had asked him to just be friends, Buck’s life seemed to crash in around him. Yeah, he deserved it. He’d hurt her all those years ago by leaving without explanation.
But now that he’d found her again, he hadn’t wanted to repeat his disappearing act. This was the woman he’d fallen in love with and never stopped loving. She deserved better.
Her tears had torn a hole in his heart, and he couldn’t keep himself from touching and holding her until she stopped crying. But embracing her had been his undoing.
If she’d told him to leave her alone, he would have found the strength to let go, but she hadn’t. She’d curled into his side, wrapped her arms around his neck and pressed her lips to his in a kiss that shook his world.
She couldn’t kiss him like that and not have feelings for him. It hurt his heart that she’d been crying. And the fact that she’d been crying because of him made it even worse.
He’d really thought she’d be better off without him. That’s why he’d stayed away from her. She’d gone on with her life, become a doctor and was now saving lives with her skills.
And here she was, wanting him to make love to her for only a night? Holy hell, how could he do that and walk away? He wanted her for more than the night. He wanted her for the white picket fence, half a dozen kids and forever.
This was the woman he’d dreamed of since he’d met her. And he was going to make love to her under the stars of an African night.
Hell, what if she got pregnant?
That thought brought him to a screeching halt. He leaned up on his arms. “We can’t do this.”
“What?” She blinked up at him, her body going stiff beneath his. “Why?”
“No protection.”
She laughed, the sound breathy. “In my backpack. Side pocket. I have at least a dozen.”
“You packed medical supplies and condoms?”
She smiled and cupped his cheek in her hand. “I hand out condoms to the women who don’t want more children to feed. They work with their husbands to get them to wear them.”
He dug in the pocket she indicated and found a condom, just as she’d said. Placing it to the side, he settled in to show her how good it could be between them again. Perhaps if he rocked her world, he’d convince her to give them a second chance. The logistics of the relationship could work themselves out in the long run. He’d make it work, somehow.
Leaning over her, he stared down into her face. The light of the stars and the shadows of the leaves on the trees made her skin a dappled silvery blue. “You’re even more beautiful than you were in medical school. And I thought you were pretty stunning then,” he said and kissed one of her eyelids, still salty from her tears.
“We’ve been on the run for a few days. I have to be a mess.
